Physiotherapy

A Chartered Physiotherapist is a health professional that assesses and provides treatment to individuals in order to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and function. This includes providing treatment in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors.

Physio’s often use screening tools as part of their general assessments. Functional movement screens provide a reliable insight into a person’s range of movement, strength and function (Minick et al., 2010, Hickey et al., 2010). They can identify functional limitations and asymmetries and can even predict risk of injury (Kiesel et al., 2007).

Crossfit and Physiotherapy – the crossover.

Crossfit uses an array of functional moves, many of which form the basis of most functional screening programmes, for example the squat, overhead squat, lunge, overhead press and push-up etc. However instead of just testing once (i.e. “screening”), Crossfit constantly re-evaluates performance on a daily/weekly basis. Each WOD tests a different facet of kinetic function. Constantly varied training routines that tax the body differently every time. The one constant requirement in each routine, is that there is no compromise on correct technique and form.

Form = Function.

In many ways this is the beauty of the Crossfit training system. It is in itself a re-occurring functional screening tool – it constantly re-evaluates. So if you participate in crossfit, and you have a movement dysfunction, you will soon know about it!!

Injury prevention

Common injuries in participants of sports and fitness programmes are often preventable through proper coaching and repetition. Once you identify your problem areas, you can work to overcome these movement dysfunctions, and hence overcome your asymmetries and weaknesses, and reduce your risk of injury.

As a physiotherapist well versed in the crossfit training, and in movement dysfunction screening, I appreciate how range of movement difficulties can limit function and performance. We are here to help in providing treatment programmes, and to help with movement difficulties.
